The Journey of a Practitioner: From the Ashrams of Bharat to Yoga Habitat

The story of the founder of Yoga Habitat did not begin in a modern studio; it began as a way of life. Born into a family where Vedic traditions were the very fabric of daily existence, she learned the physical language of Yoga poses as a young girl. By her teenage years, her curiosity had shifted toward the profound wisdom of classical texts, and she began sharing this gift—teaching Yoga Nidra and foundational classes to younger children, beginning a lifelong commitment to service.

For over 30 years, teaching and practicing Yoga has been her constant anchor. It was the internal strength cultivated through her practice and the stillness of Yoga Nidra that sustained her through life’s most difficult chapters. Through decades of instruction, she realized a vital truth: while a class is a place to learn, the true impact of Yoga occurs when the practice is taken home. Real transformation happens within the quiet discipline of daily Asana (poses), Mudra (gestures), Mantra, and Dhyan (meditation)—an inward journey that often vanishes in the fast-paced environment of commercialized studios.

Honoring the Roots of Hindu Dharma

At Yoga Habitat, she leads with the conviction that Yoga must be honored without compromise. Yoga is an integral part of Hindu Dharma, preserved and passed down through thousands of years by the selfless Monks and Rishis of Bharat. She understands that to “white-wash” or remove the spiritual essence of Hindu Dharma from Yoga is to remove its very soul.

Acknowledging these origins is not about changing one’s religion; it is about spiritual integrity. She teaches that Yoga is a universal gift from the Hindu tradition that enhances a practitioner’s own spiritual path, regardless of their personal faith. She remains eternally grateful to the sages who codified this wisdom for the benefit of all mankind.

Scriptural Foundations: The Eternal Connection

She draws her teachings from the foundational texts of Hindu Dharma, which explicitly illustrate the eternal bond between Yoga and the Divine:

  1. Kathopanishad (2.3.11)

तां योगमिति मन्यन्ते स्थिरामिन्द्रियधारणाम्  “They consider Yoga to be the firm steady control of the senses.”

  1. Bhagavad Gita (2.48)

योगस्थकुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय  “Established in Yoga, perform your actions, O Dhananjaya (Arjuna), abandoning attachment.”

  1. Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (1.1)

अथ योगानुशासनम्  “Now begins the disciplined instruction of Yoga.”

  1. Shvetashvatara Upanishad (2.13)

पञ्चात्मकं योगगुणं प्रवृत्ते  तस्य रोगो  जरा  मृत्युः  “When the fivefold qualities of Yoga are produced, the practitioner transcends disease, old age, and even death.”

Yoga Beyond Poses: The Path of a Yogi

She teaches that a flexible body may achieve a position, but a flexible body alone does not make a Yogi. At Yoga Habitat, she champions the philosophy of “Yoga Beyond Poses.” To identify as a practitioner in her sanctuary, one must walk the path of the Yamas and Niyamas—the moral and ethical foundations of the Eight Limbs.

The Ethical Foundation

  • Yamas (Social Restraints): How one interacts with the world through Ahimsa (Non-violence), Satya (Truthfulness), Asteya (Non-stealing), Brahmacharya (Right use of energy), and Aparigraha (Non-greed).
  • Niyamas (Personal Observances): Internal discipline through Saucha (Purity), Santosha (Contentment), Tapas (Disciplined effort), Svadhyaya (Self-study), and Ishvara Pranidhana (Surrender to the Higher Consciousness).

A Vision for the Next Generation

She has created Yoga Habitat as a sanctuary where ancient values are embraced to help us become more compassionate, kind, and non-violent. She believes a Yoga pose is a journey within; as we hold a physical shape, we cultivate the stillness required to face the world with grace. Her mission is to help every individual walk upon this earth gently, helping it grow better for the generations to come.
